Oil base paints use essentially to resins. Water base paints on the other hand, contain no oils and depend on vinyl acetate, acrylic or butadiene styrene polymer resins as the film forming materials.
Varnishes incorporate one or more of a variety of natural or synthetic resins. These may be phenolic, alkyd urea formaldehyde, acrylate, vinyl or silicone resins as well as such natural resins as African copal, of rosin.
Lacquer traditionally contained nitrocellulose as the resin constituent but may now be based on phenolic or alkyd resins as well.
In the case of resins, India has indigenous rosin, shellac, cashew nut shell and bhillawanut shell liquid. However, with the advance in Paint Technology, the emphasis has shifted more and more to the use of synthetic resins alkyds, phenolics, urea formaldehydes and melamine formaldehyde resins production is now well established in the Country.
